Sullivan Campus Celebrates 80 Years of Service to Louisiana
The public is invited to attend the 80th Year Anniversary Celebration of the Northshore Technical College Sullivan Campus. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 18th, 2010 from 10:00 am. - 11:00 a.m. on the grounds of the Sullivan Campus located at 1710 Sullivan Drive. An open house will follow. The featured speakers include six graduates who will tell their story of education and success in addition to The Honorable Senator Ben Nevers and Dr. Joe May, President of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.
The Northshore Technical College - Sullivan Campus (NTC-SC) is a public institution that operates under the laws of the State of Louisiana and under the supervision of the Board of Supervisors of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. The school was founded as the Sullivan Memorial Trade School in 1930, and it was the first post-secondary public technical school in Louisiana. From its early beginnings, the Sullivan Campus has grown to a level where it is providing training to over 1900 students annually through its day, extension, and high school programs.
The original school was built on Mississippi Avenue in Bogalusa, Louisiana with funds contributed by school children, local sawmill workers and citizens of the city in memory of the city's first mayor, William H. Sullivan. The late Commissioner of Education, J.P. Starns suggested that a memorial to Sullivan be established in the form of a "manual arts training" center. Initial capital requirements were quickly exceeded, and the training center became a reality.
The school was the first vocational/technical institute to be accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1970. Since 1970, the Sullivan Campus has continuously maintained its accreditation through the Commission on Occupational Education Institutions (COEI) and its successor, the Council on Occupational Education.
The Northshore Technical College - Sullivan Campus has played a pivotal role in training and education in Louisiana. It was the first technical school in a system that has grown and been restructured under the umbrella of the Louisiana Community Technical College System which now includes 16 colleges of which Northshore Technical College is one. Effective March 2010 Louisiana Technical College Region 9 was officially named Northshore Technical College to align with the Northshore Regional Economy. While the college name changed, campus names remain the same. NTC is comprised of the Sullivan Campus, which serves as the main campus, Hammond Area Campus and Florida Parishes Campus.
