Northshore Technical Community College Presenting Flood Recovery Series

Lacombe, LA.—Northshore Technical Community College is again presenting free “Be Your Own Workforce” Training for Home Recovery at the Livingston Campus in Walker, LA. The free training is designed to teach individuals the recovery skills needed to restore and rebuild homes that have been damaged by recent flooding.

“While extensive planning efforts are underway for short and long-term recovery, homeowners in the hardest-hit areas need immediate resources,” said Campus Dean April Smith. “Training in home repair skills is essential in providing families the independence and resilience needed to advance their own recovery.”

Currently scheduled classes include Drywall/Mold Remediation, Electrical, and Flooring Installation. This free, hands-on training series is ideal for those who want to perform home recovery, those that are looking to volunteer to aid in their community's home recoveries, or those looking for life-long learning courses. Each course is just 3 hours and several sessions are scheduled. Participants must be at least 16 years of age. Registration is online at https://www.northshorecollege.edu/campuses-centers/livingston-campus.

NTCC's Flood Recovery Series started after the devastating floods of August 12, 2016. In response to the historic, unprecedented flooding event, the Louisiana Community Technical College System (LCTCS) granted Northshore Technical Community College support to provide hands-on training in home repair through the new "Be Your Own Workforce" Flood Recovery Series. The series included classes in drywall, tile/backsplash, flooring, painting, and hazardous materials. NTCC served over 300 residents within the northshore region.

In 2020, in collaboration with NTCC, LCTCS launched its DIY Home Recovery webpage at lctcs.edu/diy. The page serves as a resource for do-it-yourself training videos, instructed by NTCC's technical instructors. These instructors understand the hardships of disaster recovery and are trained and certified to deliver quality instruction.
