LACAMBE, LA – Northshore Technical Community College (NTCC) has received a grant from Chevron to expand critical Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) outreach and establish a new training program to support the regional Maritime industry in St. Tammany Parish.
“This investment from Chevron underscores their commitment to Louisiana’s educational and economic future,” said NTCC Chancellor Jim Carlson. “By simultaneously sparking interest in STEM for our young students and providing direct career readiness training for our Maritime workforce, we are building a stronger, more skilled community from the ground up."
“Chevron is proud to continue our partnership with Northshore Technical Community College to help strengthen the STEM and Maritime workforce pipeline here in St. Tammany Parish,” said Jeremy Haken, Chevron Public Affairs Manager. “By investing in hands-on STEM enrichment for young learners and supporting training programs that prepare individuals for high-demand Maritime careers, we’re helping build a foundation for long-term economic growth in our region.”
The funding will empower two distinct, high-impact initiatives designed to prepare both future students and immediate job-seekers for high-demand careers on the Northshore. A significant portion of the grant will be dedicated to NTCC’s highly successful STEM enrichment program for middle school students, including “Math Measures Up.”
In this innovative program, NTCC faculty collaborate with middle school students to demonstrate the real-world application of mathematics and measurement in various professional fields. Students participate in hands-on activities that cover both technical and biological measurements, including:
- Measuring physical properties such as distance, volume, force, and time.
- Applying concepts to health sciences by measuring blood pressure, heart rate, and Body Mass Index (BMI).
This initiative aims to make STEM concepts tangible and exciting, connecting classroom learning directly to future career paths.
The grant will also support the launch of a new workforce development initiative: the Introduction to Maritime Training course. This program is specifically designed to create a pipeline of knowledgeable, entry-level workers ready to enter the thriving Maritime industry in St. Tammany Parish.
This new workforce development program will equip individuals with essential knowledge and certifications, including:
- Career Pathways: Information about various Maritime career opportunities and required skills.
- Industry Terminology: Foundational knowledge specific to Maritime operations.
- Safety and Response: Hands-on skills training, basic firefighting, and certification in CPR and First Aid.
This specialized course will serve as a crucial first step for job seekers, ensuring they possess the fundamental knowledge and safety certifications needed to transition quickly into the workforce and contribute to the region's economic growth.
