2023 New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar

Bogalusa, LA: On March 7, 2023, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society announced that Chiantia Turner was awarded the 2023 New Century Workforce Pathway Scholarship. Chiantia attends Northshore Technical Community Colleges (NTCC) Sullivan Campus in Bogalusa. She is set to graduate from NTCC's Care and Development of Young Children (CDYC) program this May. As a New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar, recipients are recognized during the Association of Community College Trustees' (ACCT) Leadership Congress, held from October 9-12, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada. "Being part of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is an achievement in itself since NTCC's chapter only recognizes the top students with an invitation," said Dr. Jim Carlson, Vice Chancellor of Strategic Initiatives and PTK Chapter Advisor. "On behalf of the college, we are thrilled to celebrate the achievements of Chiantia Turner in her recognition as a 2023 New Century Workforce Pathway Scholarship recipient. She is already making a difference and will continue to have a positive impact on the future of her family, community, and the state."

Chiantia said, "she was not expecting to receive the scholarship but was shocked and ecstatic when she found out she received it." She plans to attend Northwestern State University in Fall 2023, completing her Bachelor's in Family and Child Services. "Opportunities do not happen; you create them," said Chiantia when asked what motivates her. She said she "always references this daily quote to help keep herself focused on her path forward."

The main focus of the CDYC Program is to prepare students to implement the developmentally appropriate practice, maintain strong family and community relationships, and rely on appropriate assessment procedures when making decisions in early childhood education. In addition, students must show a passion for their chosen field and a strong desire to learn and grow. Arlendra Zenon, Assistant Professor and Director of our CDYC program, stated, "I am most proud of my students that I have positively motivated and influenced them to choose a career in the field of Early Childhood Education. In addition, as her teacher, coach, and mentor, I am confident that she will continue to build relationships and maintain professional relationships".
