Bogalusa, LA.— Northshore Technical Community College presented a record number of scholarships to NTCC students for the 2024-2025 academic year. Due to the number of scholarship recipients across the six-campus college, Northshore College Enhancement Foundation hosted three scholarship recognition events. Twelve of NTCC’s Sullivan campus students were recognized at the inaugural Chancellor’s Scholarship Breakfast with Sullivan Vocational Foundation on March 27, 2025, at the Bogalusa Country Club.
NTCC Executive Director of Advancement, Mary Slazer, welcomed guests and invited NTCC instructor Alan Dykes to lead the invocation. NTCC Practical Nursing student Makayla Newton, who is a member of the National Guard, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Sullivan Vocational Foundation’s Board Chair, Michelle Goode, described the history of the SVF and NTCC partnership, and how far these two organizations have come in aiding students in their academic pursuits.
NTCC Chancellor Dr. Jim Carlson followed Ms. Goode, congratulating the scholarship recipients and sharing the great growth the college has had in becoming the 3rd largest community college in Louisiana. Dr. Carlson reminded everyone how impactful a scholarship can be to a student’s success. “A student could be one flat tire away from dropping out,” said Carlson. “A flat tire may mean missing class and if a student cannot afford to fix it right away, they might continue to miss class and missing class for a week or more could lead a student to decide to drop. Having the extra money a scholarship provides could be the reason our students are able to make it to graduation and a career that is waiting for them afterwards.” He urged everyone to continue to invest in our students and community so that together we can continue to make changes in the lives of our students and the communities that NTCC serves.
In 2016, the Sullivan Vocational Foundation donated to Northshore College Enhancement Foundation to establish an endowed scholarship in Health Sciences. This year’s scholarship was given to Makayla Newton (Bogalusa), Practical Nursing. In 2023, the Sullivan Vocational Foundation established another endowed scholarship in Construction Trades at NTCC, which was given to Dray Killingsworth (Franklinton), Building Technology Specialist. Endowed scholarships provide permanent funding to support scholarships in perpetuity.
The Sullivan Vocational Foundation also donated to support eight annual scholarships for students enrolled at NTCC’s Sullivan Campus. Alexander Andrews (Bogalusa), Louisiana Transfer-Associate of Science, Lakeisha Brister (Bogalusa), Practical Nursing, LaQuine Johnson (Bogalusa), Practical Nursing, Paige Palmer (Franklinton), Practical Nursing, Timothy Partman, Jr. (Franklinton), Electric Line Technician, Doneshia Smith (Bogalusa), Building Technology Specialist, and Katherine Thomas (Bogalusa), Practical Nursing, each received Sullivan Vocational Foundation Annual Scholarships.
Special guests at the breakfast included Sullivan Vocational Foundation board members Debra Taylor, Michael “Micky” Murphy, Lynn Kennedy, Parish President Ryan Seal, Ken Adams, Carolyn Johnson, and Dewayne Lambert, who also serves as NTCC’s Sullivan Campus Dean. Penny Jones attended as Senator Beth Mizell’s representative, and Suzi Bourne attended for Representative John Wyble.
