Electric Line Technician Program
St. Helena Parish, La. – Northshore Technical Community College (NTCC) welcomed students, families, industry partners, and community members to its annual Electric Lineman Rodeo, where students demonstrated the skills, they have developed through the college's Electric Line Technician program.
The event drew over 350 attendees and featured 36 student competitors participating in a variety of challenges designed to test the technical skills, speed, and safety practices required in the electric utility industry.
One of the day's featured events was the Pole Top Rescue Competition, which simulates a real-world emergency rescue scenario. Jerquan Myles earned first place in the competition with an impressive time of 1 minute and 45 seconds.
"The Electric Lineman Rodeo is more than a competition—it's an opportunity for our students to showcase the knowledge and skills they've worked hard to develop," said Burke Jones, Dean of Florida Parishes Campus. "It also gives families the chance to see what students accomplish in the program while providing employers with an opportunity to connect with the next generation of skilled electric line workers."
Representatives from DEMCO, Titan Industries, and Shelton Energy Solutions attended the rodeo, observing student performances and networking with participants interested in careers in the electrical utility industry.
The annual rodeo serves as both a community outreach event and a valuable workforce development opportunity, strengthening the connection between NTCC, industry partners, and the communities the college serves. Events like the rodeo help prepare students for successful careers while giving employers direct access to highly trained graduates ready to enter the workforce.
NTCC's Electric Line program provides students with hands-on training in electrical distribution systems, climbing techniques, equipment operation, safety procedures, and emergency response, preparing graduates for high-demand careers across the region.
