Haas 5-Axis CNC training
Hammond, LA — Northshore Technical Community College and The 1881 Institute have partnered to launch an evening CNC Machining course beginning Fall 2025, expanding access to hands-on training in advanced manufacturing. Both institutions are committed to expanding access to high-quality technical training and ensuring students graduate with recognized industry credentials.
This cutting-edge training initiative, focusing on 5-Axis machining, is made possible through a strategic partnership between the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS), Louisiana Economic Development (LED), Haas Automation, and The 1881 Institute. The collaboration aims to strengthen Louisiana’s workforce by equipping students with in-demand skills that align with the needs of modern industry.
“By investing in 5-Axis machining education, we are not only enhancing our technical training capabilities but also contributing to the economic vitality of our region,” said Dr. Melandie McGee, Vice Chancellor of Research, Planning & Sponsored Program at NTCC. “This program will open doors to high-paying careers and support the growth of advanced manufacturing across Louisiana.”
The partnership strengthens Louisiana’s manufacturing workforce pipeline by preparing students for high-demand technician and engineering technician roles through industry-aligned, practical instruction. The program is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the state by creating new job opportunities and expanding access to specialized education for Louisiana citizens.
“Our partnership with NTCC allows us to bring the high-skill manufacturing training we’ve implemented in New Orleans to the Northshore,” said Bahiy Watson, Executive Director of The 1881 Institute, a nonprofit workforce development organization that uses apprenticeships and hands-on training to prepare its participants for careers in advanced manufacturing, automation, and engineering. “This collaboration reinforces our mission to make advanced manufacturing education accessible and career-focused across the region.”
Students enrolled in the program will gain hands-on experience and foundational knowledge in:
- CNC Fundamentals
- Safety
- Haas Desktop Mill
- Haas Desktop Lathe
- Technical Drawings
- CNC Machine Operation
- CAD/CAM for Machining
- Industry Certification Preparation, including:
- NC3 Precision Measuring Instruments (PMI)
- NC3 Intermediate Measuring Instruments (IMI)
- Optional NIMS and Haas Mill/Lathe Operator Certifications
The Universal Machining Centers from Haas enable the automated production of parts on five vertical, horizontal, and rotational axes simultaneously. CNC, or computer numerical control, automation allows a trained operator to oversee production with exceptional accuracy, precision, and efficiency. As a result, job candidates with 5-axis CNC skills are highly sought-after by advanced manufacturers across the country.
