Northshore Technical Community College Holds Commencement

Northshore Technical Community College held its commencement on May 22, 2024, at the University Center of Southeastern Louisiana University. Associate Degrees, Technical Diplomas, and Certificates were conferred to 609 graduates of the college’s Academic Studies, Health Sciences, and Technical Studies Divisions. In addition, 117 Adult Education students received their HiSET Diplomas.

The processional was led by NTCC Chancellor Jim Carlson, EdD, and the program opened with a moment of reflection from Student Government Association President Brianna Vinet. “As we move forward, it is my hope that we will go further than we ever imagined,” Vinet said. “I am extremely proud to be a graduate of Northshore Technical Community College. Go Gators!

NTCC Provost Daniel Roberts, PhD, welcomed guests, including Louisiana Community and Technical College System board members Jennifer Lee and Michael “Mickey” Murphy and LCTCS Interim Vice President of Education Dr. Chandler Leboeuf.  Ms. Lee presented the Transition of Chancellor Ceremony, officially welcoming Dr. Carlson as NTCC’s 2nd chancellor. Carlson was appointed to the role by the LCTCS Board of Supervisors on October 4, 2023, after serving as Vice Chancellor of Strategic Initiatives and External Affairs since 2018. NTCC’s first chancellor, Dr. William S. Wainwright, who was called to serve as the 15th President of Southeastern Louisiana University in May 2023, presented the Chancellor’s Medallion to Carlson.

Chancellor Carlson then addressed the graduates, saying, “Today, you stand at the threshold of a new chapter, armed with knowledge, skills, and confidence. You have proven that with determination and dedication, you can accomplish great things.”

Haileigh Milann Sharkey, Rayn Garyt Braun, and Riva Requiron Williams received Chancellor’s Awards, given to students with a 4.0 cumulative GPA who have completed all the requirements for an associate degree.  The Young Alumni Award, given in honor and recognition of early academic and professional achievement that is rooted in a Northshore Technical Community College education, was presented to Ronnie Roundtree, a 2018 graduate of the HVAC Program.  Mark Corkern, a 1979 graduate of the Carpentry Program at NTCC’s Sullivan Campus, received the Distinguished Alumni Award, given in honor and recognition of professional career achievement and dedication to the NTCC mission. After a successful career in carpentry, Corkern joined NTCC as a faculty member in 1999. Corkern is retiring with 25 years of service to the college.

Michael “Mickey” Murphy received the inaugural Chancellor’s Commitment to Excellence Award, presented in honor and recognition of outstanding service to NTCC and the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.  Murphy began his career with NTCC as a Welding and Related Technical Studies Instructor in 1974, and went on to serve a counselor, assistant director, director, and dean of the Sullivan Campus. Former Governor Kathleen Blanco appointed Murphy to serve on the Louisiana Community and Technical College’s Board of Supervisors in 2007, and during his service he was also appointed by Governors Jindal and Edwards. Murphy will retire from the LCTCS Board on June 3, 2024 after over 56 years of service to education in Louisiana.
