Philosophy Statement
The NTCC ASN program is founded on the belief that nursing is a dynamic, lifelong learning process in which students develop clinical competence through experience, education, and mentorship. Inspired by Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert Theory, the NTCC ASN program recognizes that nurses advance through distinct stages of skill acquisition, moving from novice to expert as they gain real-world experience.
The program emphasizes:
- Experiential learning to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
- Clinical reasoning and critical thinking as essential competencies.
- Supportive mentorship and guided practice to foster skill development.
- Patient-centered care, ethics, and professionalism at every level of nursing education.
Organizational Framework
The ASN curriculum aligns with Benner’s five stages of clinical competence, ensuring a planned progression in knowledge, skills, and critical thinking. The organizing framework was used to guide curriculum design, teaching strategies, and faculty development to allow students to gain real-world experiences as they advance from novice toward expert.
